We had a very nice lunch today. My attorney and I went with another attorney (I think they’re invisibly joined at the hip) and his secretary, who I get along well with, and we all had a good time. I even learned what an Arnold Palmer is (half lemonade, half iced tea) although I just had bottled water. We discussed a wide range of topics and, at one point, the other attorney (who is probably as liberal as Rosie, although not nearly as offensive about it as she is) was talking about one of his experts who is a doctor. The attorney thinks he’s a “nut” because he’s volunteered to go to Iraq, has already served a tour in Afghanistan, and likes guns. I leaned over to my attorney and said “I guess I’d better not mention that I’m a huge fan of Ted Nugent’s, eh?” He just grinned at me.
We were all hoping they’d cut us loose early today, as they sometimes do the day before a holiday. For the first couple of years I worked here, the former CEO-attorney would let us know in advance that we could leave around 2:00 p.m. if our attorney(s) didn’t need us for anything. Sometimes we even got out at noon. Not anymore, though. The current CEO-attorney is more likely to send around an email at 3:00 p.m. and say we can leave at 4:00 p.m. if we’re not needed. Since it takes my husband almost an hour to pick me up (we carpool), big deal. So today we were all hoping and waiting to get the email saying when we could leave. Noon passes, then 1:00, then 2:00, still nothing. At about 3:30, my attorney tells me that I can go as soon as I finished the last edits on his brief, which took me about 5 minutes. When I left at 4:15ish, there still hadn’t been an email. Turns out the CEO-attorney wasn’t even there, he’d taken the day off. Nice, eh?
Good news for tomorrow, though. My evil sister-in-law won’t be at the cookout, so I won’t have to spend the day avoiding her as I usually do. Not sure what everyone else is bringing but my mother-in-law is supplying beef tenderloin, brats and likely hot dogs. We’re bringing the potato salad, macaroni salad and cole slaw (thank you Walmart!).
I hope everyone has a safe and happy Independence Day!
